Developed by Clyde Engineering in the early 1950's the six wheeled DH-71 diesel hydraulic was eminently suitable for sugar cane haulage.  CSR ordered three in 1954, two for Queensland use and one for the Labasa tramway in Fiji.  The DH-71 became CSR's standard loco for Fijian use up to 1964.
