PRICE and
AVAILABILITY
| All Aster locomotives are limited
production. Once sold out they are no longer available although models may still be
available from retailer stock. Factory availability can be checked at http://www.asterhobby.co.jp/price.html Argyle's Aster pricing can be found in the Aster Price List. |
PROTOTYPE
| Originally ordered in 1906 as a batch of 10
superheated 4-6-0's to allow comparison with the older P7 class, a saturated four cylinder
compund locomotive. The design was successful and the good reputation of the
locomotive led to many orders both fro within Germany and foreign railways. Up to
1928 about 3,800 P8's were built - the Prussian railway alone ordered 3,370 units.
More than 3,000 P8's were subsequently assigned to the Reichsbahn (DRG). After World
War II the Bundesbahn (DB) modified their P8's by replacing the original smoke deflectors
with those of the White design. Many of the locos received tun tenders. As
late as 1968, about 300 P8's were still in service, most of them with the DR in East
Germany. |
